While addiction is unique to each individual, there are many characteristics that are common among those who are addicted to opioids or other substances. For example, a person who is addicted to opioids typically develops a tolerance to the drug. Tolerance develops when as the brain adapts over time, thereby making the drug less pleasurable when taken at the same dosage as before. This is because the brain craves the rush of dopamine that it receives when taking the drug, which can release two to ten times as much dopamine as natural rewards do. In addition, drugs are faster at creating this release than natural rewards.
When a person becomes addicted to opioids or other drugs, the brain receptors become overwhelmed. As a result, they produce less dopamine or eliminate dopamine receptors altogether and, therefore, the dopamine has less of an impact on the brain's reward center. In response, the addict must take more of the drug in order to attain the same high as before.
