Following a car accident, it is important to take the proper steps to protect both your health and your finances. After a minor car accident, you might think it is not necessary to file a report. In reality, it is always in your best interest to file a police report after being involved in a car accident. In some cases, filing a report is required by law. But even when it is not a requirement, you will need a police report if physical or medical damage becomes apparent at a later time.
When it comes to filing a police report, it is important to remember that this is not the same as filing a claim. Rather, filing a police report is simply a way to record the accident and what took place. If you have problems with your insurance later or if the other person involved in the accident refuses to cooperate, the police report will help you with getting the compensation that you deserve after the accident.
In some cases, filing a report may not even involve waiting for the police to come to the scene. If the property damage is low, if there are no injuries or if another public emergency or disaster is underway, the police may not be able to make it to the scene of your accident. Nonetheless, you should contact the police to report your information. If the police do not come to the scene, be sure to obtain the name of the other person involved in the accident, find any witnesses and obtain their names and take pictures of the incident to file with your police report.
