Options for Treating Neck and Back Injuries After a Car Accident
Advanced Spine's Expert Physicians Provide Skilled Car Accident Treatments
After being diagnosed with a back or neck injury caused by a car accident, there are several treatment options that you might need to follow in order to recover from your injuries. While every person's treatment plan varies according to individual needs, some of the most common treatment options include:
- Chiropractic care:
Chiropractic care, particularly when used in combination with bed rest and physical therapy, can be used to treat sprains, strains and the slight tearing of tendons, ligaments and muscles.
A minimally invasive surgery that involves inserting an endoscope into the vertebra through a small incision, which helps the surgeon identify and treat compressed or pinched nerves.
- Kyphoplasty and percutaneous vertebroplasty:
Involves inserting a small balloon-like expander into the disk area between the vertebrae, which allows the surgeon to inject PMMA into the damaged vertebra. This strengthens the vertebra and helps it become more durable.
A laminectomy involves removing a small part of the damaged vertebrae known as the lamina. Damaged disk material, such as exposed cartilage and fluids, is also removed to help alleviate pain and discomfort.
Common medications used to treat pain and discomfort include ibuprofen, Ketoprofen and Naproxen. In more extreme cases, narcotic pain relievers such as codeine, Percoset, Stadol and Vicodin may be prescribed.
- Spinal fusion:
Involves joining two or more vertebrae together by grafting bone tissue to the damaged vertebrae, thereby strengthening it by making it part of the existing tissue.
